The area Kvarnholmen has been developed with housing properties on an old industrial site just outside central Stockolm. The nine steel silos located there are deemed culturally significant are labeled as conservation area protecting the structures. This meant they had to be painted with a rust protection system that is considered similar to traditional systems used. Previously it had been re-painted with red lead. The system used was the Isotrol Alkyd system. This system was chosen since underlying older paint layers with good adhesion could be kept minimizing the spread of old red lead which means a great advantage for environmental aspects.

Surface before treatment

Surfaces were primed with Isotrol Primer after which an intermediary coat of Isoguard Pansar were applied. Top coat was Isoguard Aluminium which preserved the old alumium colored aestetics in addition to provide an exelent protection against water and uv-radiation. Which were both factors since the area is close to water and in a south facing direction.

By using the Isotrol Hybrid system sand blasting was avoidable which resulted in lower costs and a more environmental friendly application since old red lead was preserved and capsulated beneath the new paint coats. Enabling the old red lead to be used for continued protection.

Disel tank coated with Isotrol Aluminium

A simplified protective application can be made with two coats of Isotrol Aluminium. The aluminium pigment make if functional as both a primer and top coat. The two coats give a thin coat system applicable directly on rusty surfaces. Perfect when a maintenance plan with recurring repainting is considered instead of a more long lasting system with thicker coats of paint.
